PowerGen into T20 quarter-finals
April 13, 2010

POWERGEN became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Carib Twenty20 tournament after thrashing Munroe Road by five wickets in the first round of 16 match yesterday at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

Left-arm spinner, Rishi Bachan took two for 13 as Munroe Road were restricted to 82 for eight from their 20 overs. The defending champions in reply closed on 83 for five with opening batsman Nicholas Sookdeosingh setting up the victory with compact knock of 36 runs from 35 balls.

PowerGen skipper, Samuel Badree won the toss and elected to bowl first on the spinner friendly wicket. The Munroe Road batsmen struggled against the all spin attack and were unable to capitalise on the field restrictions in the first six overs.

They were dealt an early blow when Badree had Aneil Mannah trapped leg before wicket without scoring. The Central based club never recovered from the early set back and were unable to build any momentum in their innings.

Munroe Road captain, Kapil Harry was the only player to show any resistance against the well disciplined PowerGen spin attack. He top scored with 25 runs before being bowled by off-spinner, Sherwin Ganga. “Man-of-the-Match” Bachan claimed the wickets of Ramesh Singh and Kriston Jarusingh’s wickets to underline PowerGen’s dominance.

Gibran Mohammed and Sookdeosingh gave the defending champions a rapid start with an opening stand of 52 runs. Both batsmen were aggressive and looked to capitalise on the field restrictions in the first six overs. Sookdeosingh was in clinical form cutting Neshal Guyadeen for a boundary in his first over.

The PowerGen openers kept the pressure on the Munroe Road players with their aggressive batting until the dismissal of Mohammed which triggered a mini collapse.

Munroe Road claimed four wickets in quick succession but were unable to bowl themselves back into the match. National under-15 captain, Vikash Mohan was the top bowler for Munroe Road taking two for seven with Harry taking two for 27.
