Champs Guyana humbled in T20 Cricket Fest
December 29, 2010

DEFENDING regional T20 cricket champions Guyana suffered an embarrassing eight-wicket defeat against Trinidad and Tobago "A" in their opening match of the T20 Cricket Festival on Tuesday at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre.

After slumping to 88 all out against the second string T&T team, West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo, included in the squad at the last minute ensured the upset victory with a thumping innings of 44 which earned him the “Man-of-the-Match” award.

The Guyanese are participating in the four-team tournament which ends on Thursday to finetune their preparation for the defence of their Caribbean Championship starting on January 9.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Guyana crumbled in the face of  incisive fast bowling  from Shannon Gabriel (two for 22) and Navin Stewart (two for 12) and were later undone by Rayad Emrit who finished with three for 14 from just 20 balls.

Four wickets fell for just eight runs as Gabriel and Stewart ripped out the top order of the much vaunted Guyanese batting lineup with Travis Dowlin, who plays club cricket in Trinidad the first to go comprehensively bowled by Gabriel for eight.

Two runs later experienced West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who opens the innings in T20 cricket for his country edged Stewart to wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed after scoring 12 and it became 30 for three when Sarwan went via the same route for a duck.

And without an addition to the score Steven Jacobs (1) joined the procession when he had his stumps dismantled by a Stewart delivery that beat him with pace and bounce. It was soon 44 for four in the 11th  over as Christopher Barnwell  (10) misread spinner Dave Mohammed and was palpably trapped leg before wicket.

Two runs later Royston Crandon was bowled all ends up by Dwayne Bravo for three and all hopes of Guyana posting a challenging total for the T&T Cricket Board’s "A" team evaporated in the warm night air with the Petrotrin gas flares hissing in the background.

But a spirited fightback led by the other Crandon brother, Esuan (21) with help from teammates Jonathan Foo (8), wicketkeeper Derwin Christian (5) took the score to 82 before Emrit, coming back after he was roughly treated in his opening spell,  took three quick wickets to sink the Guyanese.

Gabriel and Stewart impressed in their  new ball attack surprising the Guyanese top order with an immaculate line and length and just enough lift off the wicket to unsettle the batsmen  and give the home crowd, estimate at over 2,000 fans, much to look forward to on the other two days of the T20 Cricket festival.

Defending the paltry total of 88, Guyana were off to a encouraging start when  T&T "A" team opener Tishan Maraj, fresh from graduating as a medical doctor from university, was run out for one.

But Evin Lewis and Dwayne Bravo combined to take the game away from the Guyanese with an entertaining 74-run partnership which ended with Bravo six short of a well-deserved half-century.

He hit four fours while Lewis finished undefeated on 37 with a similar number of boundaries which gave their team a comprehensive victory and a place at the top of the standings by virtue of their margin of victory.

For the visitors Barnwell claimed the lone "A"  Team wicket to fall.
