TTCB – Results Guyana overpower Academy in T20 By ZAID MOHAMMED DEFENDING regional T20 cricket champions Guyana easily defeated a Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Academy side on Wednesday to stay in contention for the TT$20,000 first prize in the T20 Cricket Festival at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. Humbled by Trinidad and Tobago "A" in their opening match on Tuesday, Guyana led by Ramnaresh Sarwan rebounded with a 83-run win after posting 164 for eight wickets, and then bundling out the Academy Under-23s for 81. Spinner Devendra Bishoo wrote himself into the history books by claiming the first hat-trick in inter-regional T20 cricket when he hustled out topscorer Derone Davis, Rickson Maniram and Emile Rajah with successive balls in spectacular style to earn the “Man-of-the-Match” award. Bishoo ended with the amazing figures of three wickets for eight runs in his two overs. Going into the final day of the competition on Thursday, the Trinidad and Tobago "A" team are favorites to lift the winners’ trophy after completing their second upset victory also on Wednesday against the senior TT team. The "A" team plays the Academy XI on Thursday in the final round of matches and victory would assure them of overall honours by virtue of having played unbeaten in the series while the more fancied Trinidad and Tobago senior side and Guyana have lost one match each. Guyana opener Sewnarine Chattergoon was the bedrock on which the team’s challenging total was built hitting eight fours and one maximum in compiling an even half-century and sharing in a second wicket partnership of 57 with Sarwan who made a fighting 24. Thee duo came together after Travis Dowlin failed with the bat for the second match in a row flicking the ball to Akiel Cooper at square leg without scoring. And when Sarwan departed via the run out route, Chattergoon and West Indies veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul kept the momentum going adding 30 runs for the third wicket. Chanderpaul hit four boundaries and one six in falling just one short of a well-deserved half-century as he shepherded the lower order batsmen through the final stages of the 20 overs. Pick of the Academy bowlers was Yannick Ottley who claimed three wickets for 27 runs while Daniel St Clair took two for 26. Jahron Alfred and Dernone Davis also took one apiece to share in the spoils. Ther daunting target proved to be formidable mountain to climb for the inexperienced Under-23 cricketers whose openers Nicholas Alexis and Nicholas Sookdeosingh were send back within ten runs of each other by Andre Stoll bowling from the River End. Derone Davis had a second best score of 13 and Akeil Cooper made 12 in the losing cause as Guyana tightened their grip on the match with Stoll claiming three wickets for 23 and Veerasammy Permaul picking up two. Steven Jacobs and Chattergoon also bowled tidily to claim a wicket apiece as the Academy XI crashed to 81 all out.
